Germany Week, Links, and Life
10:26 PM
Hello all! I've been reading since the last time I posted. Almost exclusively. Also writing. And watching some tv! (The Mindy Project is back and better than ever!)
Here are the few photos I took:
Train time! I'm really good at getting to the railroad crossing at Brooks and Classen at the same time as trains! Fun! I almost had a heart attack last week because this guy had stopped his bicycle beyond the barrier and kept on walking around like he might try to go up and touch the train.
Here we have a John Deere tractor taking up both lanes of 12th Street. 12th Street is kind of a major street, so I thought it was funny. (I was also only behind it for about three blocks before turning.)
My daily routine involves reading in the Great Reading Room all morning. I'm one of those people who will panic if I don't overly organize my entire life, so I walk in there each day and know exactly how many pages I need to read to stay on track.
Aldi's having Germany week! I forgot my camera when I went there - the best item was definitely Butterkaese, but the funniest was "Fruits of the Forest Strudel." The German word Waldfruchte does literally translate to fruits of the forest, but I believe that Wild Berry might be a better translation. I also got a lot of yummy produce at Sprouts, which is a natural foods store. It was really cool, but it was a chain, and I'm not quite sure that I understand the point of chain natural foods stores. The whole point of Ozark Natural Foods in Fayetteville is that it's a co-op that sells local natural food. This is a chain that sells the same sort of stuff.
Among the Tribe of the Wannabes - This article is really good about some things, but I was unsure about the end. It kinda seemed to invalidate my right to identify as Native American as well as undefined European descent, which is nonsense since I'm a card-carrying member of my tribe. Ultimately, I'm on board with anything that makes fun of how 99.99% of non-Native Oklahomans are "definitely part Cherokee but we don't have the proof."
Did you know that you can get a refund on some beverage containers in 10 states + Guam? Oklahoma, why can't we be next?
In case you are wondering, PONS and Leo are my go-to online German dictionaries. (Some people prefer this one from TU-Chemnitz (Karl-Marx-Stadt, whatup?!), but I haven't used it.)
I went to German Club again last week and had a good time chatting with some people. Then I went home, where I was awakened by the sound of a new roof being put on our house. It looks the same as the old one, but it should work much better! Mom & I went to see The Maze Runner as well. It had a really diverse cast, but they were all guys, besides the one girl who made Bella Swan look like personality of the year. It was also mildly terrifying, but that may be because I can't remember the last time I saw an intense movie in the theater. (Maybe The Hunger Games? Or Paranoia? Was that even a movie?)
Finally, I thought this video from the Heute Show (the German version of The Daily Show) was hilarious.
