Like a responsible new citizen of the greater Oklahoma City area, I spent most of yesterday driving around and getting lost as my way of getting to know the area. At one point, I ended up near the state capitol, so I figured it was worth seeing if it was open for visitors on a Saturday morning.
It was! The guard said I could go in anywhere that was open, so I tried every single door in the building....almost all of them were locked, but I got to see some beautiful artwork of famous Oklahomans, including my fellow Chickasaw Te Ata!
The Ten Commandments are still there. If it makes you feel better, they face the building, not the road, and they're hidden by trees so you can't even see them if you're standing in the grassy area outside!
The Rotunda is so pretty! A wedding was all set up to be held on two different floors of it - the top one for the ceremony and the one below it for the reception.
I think that a lot of school groups must've tried to look with their hands over the years...
I was excited to see the Oklahoma Constitution, but it was gone for historical preservation. This sounds like the plot for the next Nicolas Cage movie: State Secrets. He steals the state constitution of Oklahoma in order to find the secret treasure of the 5 Civilized Tribes.
Remember how the guard said I could go in anywhere that was open? I tried the door to the Representatives' offices, and it was open. The door to the House gallery was propped open, so I went in to look around. It was pretty cool to be in there alone!!
The flag of the Chickasaw Nation!!
Me with the capitol building.
