Person of the Year

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably already heard that Angela Merkel was named TIME magazine's Person of the Year.

The profile reminds me of another written just a little over a year ago in the New Yorker: The Astonishing Rise of Angela Merkel.
Naturally, such a favorable write-up has garnered some criticism. Deutsche Welle believes that Merkel is an interesting person, but less popular and world-changing than TIME would have us believe.

Obviously, TIME wants to make their end of the year double issue interesting enough to sell. This may have led them to oversell Merkel a bit. She is certainly a great leader and a political force to be reckoned with. She is also suffering from a lack of voter confidence at present as the refugee crisis continues -  poll data from December 9 shows that Merkel's party, the Christian Democratic Union, would likely win just under 40% of the vote now. In the last federal election, the CDU ended up just a few seats shy of an outright majority in the Bundestag.

Angela Merkel deserved to be Person of the Year. Her influence over world politics was unparalleled this year and has not met its equal on the European level for quite some time. However, previous Person of the Year essays have not always been so positive. Although the choice was sound, it could also have been tempered with a slightly larger dose of reality.
