Dark Horses? The Other Democratic Presidential Candidates

1:00 PM

In Oklahoma, the primary election for the presidency is going to be held is just under two months. In Iowa, the campaign has reached a fever pitch as primary season approaches. A lot has been said about the large field of Republican candidates, but since the filing deadline has passed, we can also take a look at the long-shot Democratic candidates who will be on the ballot alongside Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton in Oklahoma. If you're not an Oklahoman, be sure to check out who has filed for office in your state - there are always a few interesting candidacies in primary season!

Since Oklahoma is now a semi-closed primary state, Democrat and Independent voters can vote for candidates on the Democrat ballot, while Republican voters can only vote for a Republican candidate.

Roque de la Fuente is a businessman from San Diego. He hopes to appeal to voters who feel alienated by anti-immigrant discourse from many on the right, especially by appealing to Latino voters as a "Latino presidential candidate who isn't anti-immigration." De la Fuente is against the use of the US military as a global police force, and he is also in favor of reforming the Affordable Care Act. His entry into the race was covered by The San Diego Union-Tribune, which describes him as "colorful."

Martin O'Malley is the most well-known of the candidates discussed here today. As former governor of Maryland and mayor of Baltimore, he passed gun control laws and helped to lower crime rates. Despite this, his image has been hurt by Freddie Gray's death last year while in police custody. Rolling Stone did a write-up about his campaign that discusses both his past politics and present campaign.

His positions include being in favor of increased gun control, providing a pathway to citizenship for undocumented residents, increasing renewable energy, and making college more affordable. His foreign policy platform includes heavy emphasis on collaboration with other states in order to ensure lasting changes in the world.
