Advent: Calendars Galore!
9:00 AM
Advent is one of my favorite times of the year. It's not common to observe Advent as a season here in Oklahoma, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Advent is a major part of Christmas in Germany. Every brand makes its own Advent calendar with 24 little doors. The best ones have fancy German chocolate behind each one. Since it isn't yet possible for me to give people fancy German chocolates via the internet, I thought I'd round up a few digital Advent calendars that have to do with Germany.
LEO, my favorite German-English dictionary, has an Advent calendar with poems that will send you running for your dictionary.
Lots of businesses do a giveaway each day on their calendars, which is always disappointing since you have to be in Germany to win! Deutsche Bahn's calendar is a game, which is kinda fun.
There's always Vlogmas, which is like an Advent calendar on YouTube. I really like jasminar right now for German-language videos. ConsiderCologne is a long-time favorite as well. (Lena's vlog from her last day abroad is a window onto how I felt in July 2014.)
Deutsche Welle has a nice online calendar that would be great for German learners, along with a piece about the history of Advent calendars.
In the Black Forest, one town has transformed their city hall into a gigantic Advent calendar, with one window opening to reveal a new piece of art every day.
Happy Advent!
